I believe the Creative Commons deserves the Pioneer Award because they have placed the power of ownership control directly into the hands of content producers. The more we depart from traditional publishing models, the more we are faced with situations in which traditional copyright creates legal problems. By providing a mechanism for variation in types of content protection, Creative Commons has provided a visionary framework for collaborative publishing. I've just nominated the Creative Commons for the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer Award. "EFF established the Pioneer Awards to recognize leaders on the electronic frontier who are extending freedom and innovation in the realm of information technology." My submission is as follows:
